THE SCULPTED PRIMS by Youl
The sculpted prims: a way to import modelized objects in second life.
In second life all the objects were obtained starting from basic primitives (prims) to which one could make some modifications. It will be soon possible thanks to the sculpted prims (only in the version beta for the moment) to import more complex objects (nurbs) created in external softwares such as Maya (3dsmax blender and zbrush to come). The means used is interressant since it is acted in fact of defining the shape of an object via its texture. a little like displacement the map. the co-ordinates r,v and B texture are placed in X, y and Z an example of realization:

1 - Create an object NURBS in Maya Your object must be a NURBS, we will leave here a primitive the goal not being to explain modeling under Maya to create it use small Create - primitive NURBS - Sphere (while clicking on the small square with with dimensions of sphere you can choose the number of divisions of the object).

Click right on the object to pass in under object (vertex, isoparm etc.) and modify the object to obtain the desired form pass by again in object mode. UV automatics of Maya do not require more work of you.

2 - Export of the object: open object script éditor of Maya will find it to you in small Window - General editors - Script editor.

stick the script provided by second life whom you will find here. By using the menu File fenetre of script editor, safeguard script and create a short cut if you wish it with Save selected to shelf.

run the script via your short cut or small Script - Execute the window of script editor.Une limps of dialogue opens and allows you to choose the place or you want to record the image "sculpt texture". The default settings are 64 X 64, it is disadvised going up to the top, in more of better not returning your object you would have concern with the LOD (level of detail) in second life. I prefer for my part to record in tga or bmp since exporting it even if it means to record it then in jpg via photoshop for alleger a little without losing too much in quality you obtain an image of this type:

3 - Importation of the object in second life Upload your image in second life. Create an object of the sphere type then activate the drop-down menu standard Building block of the small object for select sculpted. click on the basic image (which corresponds to an apple) for select the news in your inventory.

The object is transformed into that which you had modelled under Maya. It does not remain any more but with the mapper.
